Friday Night Track Fever

Friday night at Hellyer Park Velodrome, San Jose, for intense bicycle track racing! Thanks to Russ, Greg and Garrett for VIP access and what an amazing men’s scratch race featuring a capacity 36 racers on the track going at it for 30 laps, followed by a gutsy keirin race in which a rider threw a chain. To add to the intensity, women’s keirin race faced five women falling down on the concrete hard. I saw it all in slow motion from the center of the track; the ugly sound of skin shredding into concrete, metal and rubber bouncing at 30mph, cringe inducer. Two of the five fallen went to the hospital via ambulance. Get well soon! Those falls get harder to recover to as you age, serious!
